Abstract:

In the era of Digital Disruption, organizations around the world are discovering that the traditional, phased-gate approach to systems engineering can no longer support the growing complexity of emerging cyber-physical systems while also meeting the demands of the marketplace. We must find a better way to manage this complexity… or see ourselves ‘disrupted’ into extinction.

In this presentation we build a foundational understanding of what agile and devops are, and how software has successfully matured these frameworks in the past decade. Next we’ll review their key principles and how we can bring these practices and outcomes to systems engineering- where we must align software, firmware, hardware and other engineering disciplines while meeting rigorous regulatory compliance requirements. We’ll discuss how a synchronized value-stream, on an iterative cadence, can:

  • Reduce batch sizes to leverage shorter learning cycles
  • Shorten queues to reduce the high costs of delays
  • Help limit Work in Progress (WIP) with capacity planning
  • Build quality in to accelerate V&V/compliance
  • Improve economic decision making
The challenge for many systems engineers is in identifying, and then building, smaller increments of value in smaller increments of time. Some of the ideas we explore may be familiar to you, but revisited through the lens of agile and devops can serve to improve both the technical and business outcomes your organization seeks.

The following is an interesting article relating to DevOps:

Presenters:

Bryan L Smith, SPC4

Bryan has been in the software business since 1993 and has been helping software and systems engineering organizations improve the way they design, build and deploy their wares for over 20 years. His career has taken him from a small software startup in Boston, MA to Rational Software in Boulder, CO- which became part of IBM in 2003. He entered the world of agile with a Boulder startup called Rally Software which, after a couple acquisitions, is now part of Brocade. Bryan has been with 321 Gang since 2011 and currently leads 321 Gang’s Scaled Agile Framework (SAFe) business.

Marguerite Bryan, Sr. Agile Solutions Coach, SPC4

Marguerite brings 20+ years of leadership experience transforming digital opportunity into measurable business results. With proven success overcoming digital transformation challenges in private and public sectors, as well as regulated, corporate and lean startup environments, Marguerite compliments her technical savvy, business acumen and laser-sharp customer focus with expert leverage of Agile, Scaled Agile, MBSE, User-Centered Design, Lean and ITIL practices, reaching across and beyond disciplines to ignite cultures of purpose-driven engagement, innovation and relentless improvement.

Partnering directly with C-level executives or coaching diverse teams of technical, operational or PMO professionals, Marguerite approaches organizational transformation from a holistic view of the enterprise and its value-streams, optimizing for hypothesis driven experimentation, fast feedback cycles, and the lean, continuous flow of value. With leadership experience also in traditional governance, finance and PMO functions, Marguerite engages in waterfall, hybrid and transitional environments with the relevant insight and experience, tailoring each Agile transformation to organizational goals and mission success.
