Title: Lightning Protection for Military Facilities – A Systems Engineering Approach

Synopsis:
Lightning causes over $7 Billion in damage every year just in the United States – it is the planet’s third most destructive force. A Lightning strike is beautiful, unpredictable, and extremely dangerous, a phenomenon that has amazed, frightened, and intrigued humans for centuries. Scientists and engineers study lightning in an attempt to find solutions that prevent it from causing so much damage. We’ve designed and built systems we believe will protect us, ranging in complexity from simple lightning rods mounted atop buildings, to elaborate structures consisting of towers, overhead interconnected conductors, and systems of grounding rods and grounding rings. We continue to improve lightning protection technology though research, experiment, forensics, and using various modeling and analysis techniques to help understand the physics and effects of lightning. The goal of this effort is to design systems that will protect against even the most powerful strikes, which often can deliver 200,000 Amps or more in less than a millisecond.

This presentation will examine lightning from a Systems Engineering perspective. We will show how to tackle the complex problem of one of nature’s most destructive forces by applying a structured and scientific approach using Information Reference Modelling tools and methodology.

We will illustrate using a case study, how the SE processes can be applied to a set of complexities and challenges facing engineers today in the design and construction of lightning protection for military facilities.

Speaker:

Josette Rice is President and founder of Chigosi Company, an engineering and construction firm. She has 35 years of experience in Systems Engineering and Project Management, spanning the defense and commercial industries. Ms. Rice has managed major programs for Department of Defense in command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence and reconnaissance (C4ISR), and military satellite communications.

Ms. Rice’s engineering and construction focus is in designing and building sustainability systems. She serves as principle–in-charge on a variety of projects for the U.S Air Force, Department of Veterans Affairs, U.S. Forest Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture Research Service, and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. She holds a MS in Electrical Engineering and MS in Materials Science and Engineering.

Presentation and Dinner:
The first 1/2 hour is for dinner and networking. The optional buffet dinner starts at 5:30. The presentation begins at approximately 6 pm. The cost of the buffet is $10 for members, $15 for non-members.
