Synopsis: The focus of this presentation is on a unique application of Model Based Systems Engineering tools to promulgate an ASME standard. The presentation will provide an overview of the content of the standard and then provide a walk thru of the standard in its current state within the MBSE tool.

The standard is ASME PSD-1, Plant Systems Design. It is a technology-neutral standard for design of facilities with potential for significant hazards to the health and safety of the public, the worker, and protection of the environment. It includes nuclear facilities, including power generation; fossil power generation facilities (e.g., coal, natural gas); oil refining; oil and natural gas production; petrochemical; chemical; and hazardous waste plants and facilities. It will be accredited by the American National Standards Institute.

The Model Based Systems Engineering tool is Innoslate, a collaborative cloud-native MBSE tool released in 2012. It has been developed by SPEC Innovations (Systems and Proposal Engineering Company), a leader in systems engineering since 1993. Steve Dam, the President and Chief Operating Officer is a long-time member of INCOSE and was formerly the president of the San Diego Chapter.

Speaker: Mr. Ralph Hill

Mr. Ralph Hill. Although retired, Ralph continues his volunteer activities in support of ASME codes and standards. He has been actively involved as a contributor and a leader in promulgation of ASME nuclear codes and standards for over 40 years. He is an ASME Fellow and recipient of several ASME honors and awards. Ralph is the current Chair and champion for development of the new ASME Plant Systems Design standard. He is actively involved in bringing risk-informed probabilistic design methods into the ASME Code as well as initiatives to support both advanced and next-generation nuclear reactors.

Ralph has been a member of INCOSE since 1994 and was very active when he was a leader of the Silver State Chapter. He is a past member of the Board and even ran for president one year (they needed two candidates)! Ralph had an 8-year break in his participation when he was working with Westinghouse Electric Company.
