The Transformation of Systems Engineering
New techniques like MBSE and Agile SE continue to gain momentum

We certainly are living in interesting and exciting times in our systems engineering (SE) profession.  There are many techniques, methodologies, and tools which have maturated to the level of causing a paradigm shift in the SE world.  This is mainly due to the continual need to manage the complexity of systems and to increase the productivity of the engineering team.

In my earlier professional years, I started learning about SE from classics such as "System Requirement Analysis" by Jeffery O. Grady and "The Art of System Architecting" by Mark W. Maier and Eberhardt Rechtin .  Over past 50+ years, there has been a plethora of research and applied SE in the industry that have contributed to the SE body of knowledge (BoK).  This includes the work of the INCOSE Working Groups (WG) such as Model Base System Engineering (MBSE) Initiative and Agile Systems and Systems Engineering.  The momentum is certainly accelerating this paradigm shift on how we do SE on our current and future projects.

For example, our DoD customers in the Aerospace industry are advocating more use of MBSE for programs and will be including the requirement for this in future Request for Proposals (RFP).  We can therefore expect programs to be managed with a core MBSE centric philosophy and not as “I guess we need to include some MBSE work” or as an afterthought.

At a recent MBSE Summit, I heard commercial companies such as Google are seeking MBSE engineers to work for them.  Agile SE is also being look at more to help with the rapid pace, dynamic organizational environment, and schedule demands for projects to develop quality production systems quickly.  This is certainly true for commercial products but is now true for Aerospace products too!  As for Agile SE, Rick Dove (Chair of the INCOSE Agile Systems WG) has used American Football as a good example of how this methodology might work (see Slide 10 American Football is Agility in Action, also shown below).
I also know of some companies producing 'playbooks' on the different aspects of managing the project.
American Football and Systems Engineering

As you can see, the SE community is using the best of both within and outside the SE BoK to transform SE into an effective tool in a projects arsenal to produce quality products for their customers.

I encourage all who want to increase their SE knowledge and skill set in MBSE and Agile SE to attend both our 2-Day INCOSE San Diego Tutorial in Agile Systems Engineering as Risk Management, and the 2018 San Diego INCOSE Mini-Conference - Systems Engineering Transformation, this Fall.  These two events will "peel the onion" on these two main SE areas and will enlighten you on how they are truly transforming SE.  See you there!

Leveraging the Cloud and AI to Enable Agile and Accelerated Systems Engineering
Wednesday, Nov 7th, 2018, 5:30 - 7pm

Presenter: Faris Hamdi, Voyager Space Technologies

As systems become more complex with deep integration of multiple disciplines (software, electrical, and mechanical), information relating to designs, analysis and decision making become more difficult to manage and update which can lead to significantly extended project timelines and increased costs. This coupled with increasingly ambitious projects require us to build systems that enable the management of complexity and reduction of project timelines, and therefore cost.

Voyager is developing a cloud-based engineering platform that allows engineers to directly integrate their analysis (MATLAB, python, FEA) into a modeling environment along with system block diagrams, bills of materials (BOM) and CAD files. This Integrated modeling and development environment allows teams to reuse analyses and models across projects, as well as utilize those models concurrently and collaboratively.

Location: Filippi’s Restaurant in Kearny Mesa at 5353 Kearny Villa Rd, San Diego, CA 92123 (Google Maps)
Presentation and Dinner: The first 1/2 hour is for dinner and networking. The optional buffet dinner starts at 5:30., and the presentation begins at approximately 6 pm. The cost of the buffet is $10 for members, $15 for non-members, and includes pizza, salad, pasta, and soft drinks.
Webcasting: This presentation will be webcast starting at approximately 5:50 pm. Please check the website for further details.
Cost: Free.
