Title: A Better Brew – Benefits of Applying Systems Engineering in the Beer Industry

Synopsis:

In the 1980’s, there were fewer than 100 breweries operating across the entire U.S. By the end of 2016, that number had risen to nearly 5,300. With that surge came a demand for purpose-built brewing equipment; largely based on proven designs from European equipment. As craft brewing began to push the limits of beer styles and brewing processes, the brewing equipment needed to change to provide the necessary capabilities.

Premier Stainless Systems produces brewing equipment for small and mid-size breweries, including overseas customers. While a core product line exists, each system is customized and hand built to the user’s specifications. All of this occurring over a development and production lifecycle of just 26 weeks.

This presentation will show how we apply systems engineering processes to design and manufacture custom brewing equipment to meet the needs of brewers. It will also detail how the systems engineering process is applied to the development of hardware-centric platforms. This presentation will also highlight some of the challenges of applying SE in an industry where most stakeholders are unfamiliar with SE processes.
