Synopsis:

Expectations about safety, reliability, affordability, and environmental impact of the electricity that powers our lives continue to evolve. As we see more evidence of the impact of climate change, communities and consumers are adopting technologies to support a clean energy future and placing increasing value on decarbonization and resilience.

Technology advancements in grid software/hardware and new resources like energy storage and solar have fostered continued progress in strengthening and modernizing the electric grid. However, the underlying design and architecture have not evolved at the same pace.

Fundamental changes in how the grid is planned, designed, built, and operated are necessary to meet future challenges. We expect major changes in how customers will use electricity. Power supply challenges will become more prevalent and complex to manage. The grid will be exposed to growing climate change effects. Grid planning, design and operations will need to evolve. The grid’s technological capabilities will need to be reimagined.

This presentation will describe some of these challenges and SCE’s approach in addressing them.

Speaker:
Ms. Renee Cinar

Renee leads a team of Project Managers and Specialists at Southern California Edison who manage a portfolio of substation automation, distribution automation, and wildfire prevention technology projects aimed at modernizing the electric grid in support of California’s greenhouse gas reduction goals. She was previously employed by Ford Motor Company where she worked as a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electrical Systems Engineer. Renee also spent 7 years teaching in the Technology & Applied Sciences department at Saddleback College as an Adjunct Faculty member. She completed her BSEE, with honors, from University of California, Riverside in 2002 and MS in Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering from University of California, Irvine in 2014.
