Topic: The Patentability of Computer Software
Abstract:
Computer control is even more pervasive in systems engineering in this day of the Internet of things. In this presentation, we will discuss patentability of computer software and ways to successfully exploit new software developments in the course of project management. We will address how recent Supreme Court decisions and extensive guidance from the United States Patent Office affect patent eligibility of computer programs. Truly creative methods and program machines remain patentable. We will touch upon the decreasing eligibility of the class of patents that has been characterized by simply computerizing abstract thoughts.
Speaker:
Robert Cogan is Principal Attorney at Continuum Law in downtown San Diego. He is a legal and business advisor to high tech, computer software and hardware companies, and entrepreneurs. He works with software development, licensing, patents, copyrights, litigation, and trade secret disputes. He has also written and prosecuted hundreds of patent applications. Rob has an electrical engineering degree and is a member of the California Bar.
He is a frequent speaker before professional, technical, and academic organizations and presents CLE (continuing legal education) classes. Other pursuits include guest lecturing and working as an expert witness.
Mr. Cogan is counsel to software, electronics, computer, Internet, manufacturing, and communications companies in business and intellectual property. He works with technologies including electronics, telecommunications, digital and analog systems, computer processors, microcircuits, software programs and architectures, the Internet, and medical devices.
Mr. Cogan was awarded a B.E. degree in Electrical Engineering from The Cooper Union in New York City in 1966. His Juris Doctor Degree was awarded in 1970 from the George Washington University.
Presentation and Dinner:
The first 1/2 hour is for dinner and networking. The optional buffet dinner starts at 5:30. The presentation begins at approximately 6 pm. Please note – due to rising costs for INCOSE, the buffet is now $10 for members, $15 for non-members.
