Abstract:

Traditionally, systems engineering has relied on a “system-of-systems” approach for design and acquisition. But what does systems engineering look like when information itself is the product?

In today’s world, the ability to rapidly design, deploy, and manage IT services is paramount. Unlike a traditional product or system, services must be delivered “on demand” and are “consumed” as they are produced. Furthermore, IT services must be agile, with a lifecycle measured in weeks or months, not years.

Information Technology Infrastructure Library (ITIL) is the predominant framework for service management, enabling organizations (both industry and government) to deliver efficient and effective services in a standardized, repeatable manner. This presentation discusses an ITIL-based approach to traditional system engineering by exploring the relationship between systems and services. How do systems and services relate to each other? What are the key similarities and differences? What is a system engineer’s role in an ITIL world? Finally, how can you use the best of systems engineering and ITIL to help your organization transition from a systems to a services approach?
