Paul Gorman on How to Fit 10 Pounds of Stuff into a 5-Pound Bag

Abstract: In today’s healthcare environment, hospitals are challenged to improve patient flow and throughput, improve operating efficiencies, and reduce costs.  In this presentation, Mr. Gorman will discuss ways that Northern Lights helped Los Angeles County + University of Southern California (LAC + USC), St. Mary’s Hospital in Tuscon, AZ, and other hospitals achieve daunting goals through the application of rigorous analytical techniques.  Projects included combining six Emergency Departments into one; optimizing patient flow and allocating outpatient clinical services in a newer, but smaller, facility; and maximizing hospital financial impact through improved Emergency Department throughput.  These, and other projects, will be described in detail.

Objectives: From this presentation, the attendee will:

  • Learn about advanced analytical techniques that can be used to overcome complex operational challenges
  • Understand the difference between simulation modeling and spreadsheet analysis
  • Understand simulation modeling’s role as a tool to solve complex problems and improve operational performance

Biography: Mr. Gorman holds an M.S. in Operations Research/Systems Analysis from the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA.  He is a retired U.S. Navy Commander and pilot.  In the course of his 20 year civilian career, he as served as Senior Operations Research Analyst for Federal Express Corporation, as Sales Director for CACI Products Company, and as Product Lines Sales Director for Compuware Corporation in Europe.  His specialty is in advance analyical tools and techniques, particularly simulation modeling of complex systems.

About Northern Lights: The mission of Northern Lights Systems Navigation is to improve the operational effectiveness of healthcare organizations by providing advanced analytical consulting services and products, including computer simulation modeling.  www.northernlightsnav.com
