Abstract:

Human Systems Integration: Definitions, Evolutions, and Applications

Systems Engineering and Human Systems Integration (HSI) share similarities in their approach, as both involve “trans-disciplinary and integrative approaches to enable the successful realization, use, and retirement of an engineered system” (see INCOSE Essential Definitions). This presentation explores the user-centered side of Systems Engineering, from both a Department of Defense (Systems Acquisition) and an INCOSE perspective.

First, we will define HSI and establish its relationship with Human Factors, User Experience, and other Human-Centered disciplines. Through success stories (and lessons learned), we will explore the evolution of HSI, systems engineering, and DoD Acquisition as they have adapted from the traditional Waterfall Development / V-model to Agile Development / Agile Systems Engineering approaches. Opportunities and challenges will then be presented on current trends such as: DoD HSI Standardization, new DoD policy, and rapid system development (through DevOps and MBSE).

This webinar session will conclude with some tips on how systems engineers can apply HSI and Human-Centered principles to their own work before we open the floor to all to share their perspectives and project successes.
