2012 JUNE TUTORIAL – SYSTEM OF SYSTEMS ENGINEERING: WHAT IT IS, HOW TO GET STARTED, AND WHAT IS IMPORTANT AT THE SOS LEVEL

Dr. Jo Ann Lane on System of Systems Engineering: What it is, How to Get Started, and What is Important at the SoS Level

Abstract: Today’s need for more complex, more capable systems in a short timeframe is leading more organizations towards the integration of existing systems, Commercial-Off-the-Shelf (COTS) products, and new systems into network-centric, knowledge-based system of systems (SoS). With this development approach, system development processes to define the new architecture, identify sources to either supply or develop the required components, and eventually integrate and test these high level components are evolving and are being referred to as SoS Engineering (SoSE). This workshop will present the SoSE processes identified through the analysis of 18 US Department of Defense (DoD) SoSs and documented in the US DoD Systems Engineering Guide for Systems of Systems. The workshop will further discuss follow-on research related to SoSE engineering artifacts, analysis of SoSE engineering activities through a lean lens, tailoring SysML for SoSE, the role of system interoperability in SoSE, SoS test and evaluation, and SoS capability cost estimation as time permits and in response to audience interests.

About the Speaker: Dr. Jo Ann Lane is a research assistant professor at the University of Southern California Center for Systems and Software Engineering, conducting research in the area of systems engineering and system of systems engineering (SoSE). She was a co-author of the 2008 Department of Defense Systems Engineering Guide for Systems of Systems. Current areas of research include SoSE processes, SoSE cost modeling, analysis of SoSE with respect to lean principles, system of systems (SoS) interoperability, SoSE test and evaluation, system development feasibility assessments, the incremental commitment spiral model, and innovation in systems engineering. She has published over 20 papers in the SoS area, several of which are widely referenced in the SoS literature. She is also an emeritus professor in the Computer Science Department at San Diego State University where she continues to teach an occasional course in software engineering, software measurement, and software management. In addition, she is currently a member of the INCOSE professional organization and Past President of the San Diego, CA INCOSE Chapter. Prior to her current work in academia, she was a key technical member of Science Applications International Corporation’s Software and Systems Integration Group for over 20 years, responsible for the development and integration of software-intensive systems and systems of systems. She received her PhD in systems engineering from the University of Southern California and her Master’s in computer science from San Diego State University.
