Abstract:
In the era of Digital Disruption, organizations around the world are discovering that the traditional, phased-gate approach to systems engineering can no longer support the growing complexity of emerging cyber-physical systems while also meeting the demands of the marketplace. We must find a better way to manage this complexity… or see ourselves ‘disrupted’ into extinction.
In this presentation we build a foundational understanding of what agile and devops are, and how software has successfully matured these frameworks in the past decade. Next we’ll review their key principles and how we can bring these practices and outcomes to systems engineering- where we must align software, firmware, hardware and other engineering disciplines while meeting rigorous regulatory compliance requirements. We’ll discuss how a synchronized value-stream, on an iterative cadence, can:
Reduce batch sizes to leverage shorter learning cycles
Shorten queues to reduce the high costs of delays
Help limit Work in Progress (WIP) with capacity planning
Build quality in to accelerate V&V/compliance
Improve economic decision making
The challenge for many systems engineers is in identifying, and then building, smaller increments of value in smaller increments of time. Some of the ideas we explore may be familiar to you, but revisited through the lens of agile and devops can serve to improve both the technical and business outcomes your organization seeks.
