Please join us for a special presentation on General Atomics’ contribution to the International Thermonuclear Expansion Reactor (ITER) program, where global scientists attempt to harness the power of fusion reaction. This event will be Hybrid, held in person at Filippi’s restaurant in Kearny Mesa, plus webcast to external audience. This presentation also includes a free buffet for in-person attendees.

Synopsis:

Nikolai Norausky, P.E., will give a brief tour through fusion energy and the status of International Thermonuclear Expansion Reactor (ITER), the world’s largest science experiment, with a focus on the engineering and manufacturing of the ITER Central Solenoid (CS) magnet modules. The CS is a critical component of the ITER experiment, an international collaboration of 35 nations that will demonstrate the feasibility of fusion energy. Fully assembled, this massive magnet will be 59 feet tall, 14 feet in diameter, and weigh a thousand tons. Often referred to as the “heart of the ITER facility,” it will drive 15 million amperes of electrical current that will be used to shape and control the fusion reaction.

What is ITER?

ITER (“The Way” in Latin) is one of the most ambitious energy projects in the world today.

In southern France, 35 nations* are collaborating to build the world’s largest tokamak, a magnetic fusion device that has been designed to prove the feasibility of fusion as a large-scale and carbon-free source of energy based on the same principle that powers our Sun and stars.

The experimental campaign that will be carried out at ITER is crucial to advancing fusion science and preparing the way for the fusion power plants of tomorrow.

The primary objective of ITER is the investigation and demonstration of burning plasmas—plasmas in which the energy of the helium nuclei produced by the fusion reactions is enough to maintain the temperature of the plasma, thereby reducing or eliminating the need for external heating. ITER will also test the availability and integration of technologies essential for a fusion reactor (such as superconducting magnets, remote maintenance, and systems to exhaust power from the plasma) and the validity of tritium breeding module concepts that would lead in a future reactor to tritium self-sufficiency.

  

General Atomics and ITER

General Atomics is fabricating the Central Solenoid modules for the international ITER project, an unprecedented scientific collaboration that aims to demonstrate the feasibility of fusion power as a clean-energy resource on a global scale.

The Central Solenoid will be comprised of six individually fabricated modules. When fully assembled, the Central Solenoid will measure 5 stories tall, 14 feet wide, and weigh 1,000 tons. The most powerful pulsed superconducting electromagnet ever constructed, the Central Solenoid is often referred to as the heart of ITER and will drive 15 million amperes of electrical current.

Mr. Nikolai Norausky serves as the Deputy Program Manager and Technical Lead for the General Atomics International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) Central Solenoid (CS) program, leading the GA technical team in creating innovative solutions to maintain technical progress on the production of the magnet modules. Mr. Norausky is also developing technology solutions for future fusion devices that will leverage the capabilities of high-temperature superconductors.

Thursday Lunchtime 2023 Systems Engineering Professional (SEP) Certification Group Study ‘Cohort’

(This cohort is open to all, including non-INCOSE members. Non-members may need to purchase a copy of the INCOSE Handbook – see information below.)

The LA and San Diego chapters are hosting independent group study (‘cohorts’) sessions for the INCOSE Systems Engineering Professional (SEP) certification this Spring & Summer.

This registration page is for the Thursday lunchtime Cohort, hosted by San Diego, and starts on Thursday, May 18th.  This Cohort will meet between 12 noon and 1:30pm Pacific Time.

This Cohort will be primarily hosted by the San Diego chapter of INCOSE.

Important Information:

  • The Cohort is 15 weeks long and meets once a week using Zoom. Expect each session to last 1.5 hours.
  • This Cohort is for the lunchtime sessions, 12 noon – 1:30pm, Pacific Time, and starts on May 18th, 2023, ending on August 24th, 2023.
  • We may limit this class to 50 students. Please sign up immediately if you are interested, and only if you are serious about attending.
  • The Los Angeles chapter will also offer a lunchtime Cohort on Thursday evenings from 7 – 8:30pm Pacific Time, if that better suits your schedule.  You may instead register for it here, or, you may register for both of the Cohorts. Both have the same schedule.
  • Cost: FREE. However, in order to foster team cohesion and moral, we ask that you attend ALL the Cohort sessions. If you must miss a session, you are welcome to join the Thursday lunchtime Cohort’s session that week to make it up.

Additional Information:

  • The Cohorts are mostly student-run training sessions. There will also be multiple Cohort team leaders (only 1 or 2 will lead each session) that will provide the introductions, schedule, and the Zoom sessions and resolve any roadblocks, but the students will present. Each student will be part of a small team and is expected to help present a section of the INCOSE Handbook section to the entire Cohort.
  • We will base this Cohort on the overlap of the current INCOSE Handbook Version 4 and the soon to be released Version 5. Note that the handbook is the basis for the SEP test.
  • You must have your own copy of the INCOSE Handbook V4.  Active members may download it from the INCOSE store for free.

 

* NOTE – Starting about August 1st, 2023, the SEP exam will test on the overlap of V4 and V5 of the handbook. Since the test will not contain any V5 material until Jan 2024, this Cohort will only study V4 of the Handbook. We strongly encourage all students to take the test in 2023, before V5 material is added.

About SEP Certification:

What is Systems Engineering Professional certification? Certification is a formal process whereby a community of knowledgeable, experienced, and skilled representatives of an organization, such as INCOSE, provides confirmation of an individual’s competency (demonstrated knowledge, education, and experience) in a specified profession. Certification differs from licensing in that licenses are permissions granted by a government entity for a person to practice within its regulatory boundaries. Certification also differs from a “certificate” that documents the successful completion of a training or education program. There are three types of INCOSE SEP certification: ASEP, CSEP, and ESEP. What is the Systems Engineering Professional test? The SEP test is a 2-hour exam designed to test your knowledge of INCOSE systems engineering practices and processes. Please read more here.
