PLEASE JOIN US for a fun and educational tutorial on MBSE and SysML!

This July 20th, 2024 (Saturday), INCOSE San Diego is pleased to offer an IN-PERSON 6-hour tutorial on the fundamentals of Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) and the System Modeling Language (SysML). This event will be held in San Diego, California.

Synopsis

According to the INCOSE MBSE Initiative Working Group, Model Based Systems Engineering is the formalized application of modeling to support system requirements, design, analysis, verification and validation activities. MBSE also reduces the risk of errors and inconsistencies by allowing greater traceability, and allows the creation of a single source of truth, ensuring that all stakeholders are working with the same information and can identify system-level issues quickly.

This MBSE tutorial will begin with the instructor, Dr. Ter Veen, providing a brief overview of MBSE and SysML, followed by a hands-on group project to build a simple SysML model of a satellite, starting with its requirements.  This class model will be built and refined through a number of iterations, possibly 4 or 5.

The class will use a 20-day trial version of Astah SysML – you may download a Windows version here.  You can also download it the day of the tutorial at the classroom via WIFI.

Limited to 18 students.

Please note – Registration will close at 9am Friday, 19 July 2024 (24 hour beforehand).

Date: Saturday, July 20, 2024
Time: 9 AM – 3 PM Pacific Time

Important Note – This tutorial will be held within the SAIC building in Point Loma/Sports Arena. Foreign Nationals may attend, but must register at least two weeks in advance and let us know in the registration Notes textbox so that we may inform SAIC beforehand. Thank you!

What You Will Need: A personal laptop computer and power cord that you can use to run software on. You will use a trial version the SysML/MBSE software application Astah SysML (Windows version) on your own personal laptop.
Important:  We highly recommend a personal laptop!  A corporate or government laptop may not allow you to connect to an external license server, and you will likely NOT have administrative rights to load software.

Instructor: Dr. James Ter Veen

Dr. James ter Veen has over 30 years of experience managing innovative engineering in high technology hardware/software/systems development including systems architecture, cyber security, artificial intelligence, project planning, estimation, scheduling, integration, verification, validation, product demonstrations, and technical documentation in a variety of businesses from small start-ups to large corporations. James has acquired expert knowledge of the full development lifecycle from concept to disposal. He finds visual representations of systems designs facilitate communications with customers and among engineering teams. When UML was standardized by the Object Management Group, he used it extensively on software development projects and informally on system designs. Since 2015, using tools that support the SysML standard, he has architected and/or guided development of many system-of-systems projects. He has a proven track record of building and managing integrated product teams working in areas including wireless sensor networks, mass data storage technologies, electronic security systems, information systems management, and medical data analysis. He has earned an AS in Electronics Technology, a Bachelor’s in Information Technology, a MS in Systems Engineering and a PhD in Systems Engineering from George Washington University.
