Abstract:

In the era of Digital Disruption, organizations around the world are discovering that the traditional, phased-gate approach to systems engineering can no longer support the growing complexity of emerging cyber-physical systems while also meeting the demands of the marketplace. We must find a better way to manage this complexity… or see ourselves ‘disrupted’ into extinction.

In this presentation we build a foundational understanding of what agile and devops are, and how software has successfully matured these frameworks in the past decade. Next we’ll review their key principles and how we can bring these practices and outcomes to systems engineering- where we must align software, firmware, hardware and other engineering disciplines while meeting rigorous regulatory compliance requirements. We’ll discuss how a synchronized value-stream, on an iterative cadence, can:

  • Reduce batch sizes to leverage shorter learning cycles
  • Shorten queues to reduce the high costs of delays
  • Help limit Work in Progress (WIP) with capacity planning
  • Build quality in to accelerate V&V/compliance
  • Improve economic decision making
The challenge for many systems engineers is in identifying, and then building, smaller increments of value in smaller increments of time. Some of the ideas we explore may be familiar to you, but revisited through the lens of agile and devops can serve to improve both the technical and business outcomes your organization seeks.

Abstract:

Treating an Organization as a System

An organization, to some extent is a system like any other – inputs, processes, outputs and feedback loops. What makes a bit difficult to design and manage is its human nature, and its complex nature. To influence and change an organization, you need to view it from a multi-level perspective. Each level has its own dynamics, challenges, and interventions. In addition, you need to evaluate the severity of its problems and/or opportunities to pursue.

Oftentimes when management and consultants try to change organizations, much emphasis is put on the “cultural” elements – that is the norms, behaviors and dynamics of resistance to change. While critical to any change effort, one must also look at the other elements or systems that make organizations work, and sometimes not work. Otherwise, it would like building a car and only focusing on the tires.

Dr. Chaudron will summarize these concepts in his presentation and how to use them. He will also look forward to a lively Q&A.

Abstract:

* Roland’s public releasable report can be downloaded HERE.

This evening Mr. Roland Feghali will be presenting on his six-month residency at Amazon Web Services (AWS) Cyber Information Technology Exchange Program (CITEP). The CITEP provided him the opportunity to discover the “how” and “why” of cloud implementation success, which fueled the “what” of cloud products and tools. He will highlight the three basic success tenets of this disrupting company:

  1. The “microservicing” of the culture
  2. A stable and supportive infrastructure environment, and
  3. State-of-the-art dependable Technology-as-a-Service

Applying these tenants successfully in an organization requires an upgrade to agile processes while adopting an agile culture. Mr. Feghali will also summarize the 14 Amazon Leadership Principles as the guiding principles for the cultural transformation. For example, the Learning Principle of Customer Obsession involves a technique of developing a 6-page (limit enforced) document that is read (in silence) by the team before discussing.

We invite SD INCOSE members (and guests) to attend this exciting presentation and to discuss how the AWS Tenants and Leadership Principles can be applied to your organization!
