Cybersecurity and Systems Engineering: Commercial and Government Compliance Frameworks, and How to Incorporate Them into Your Development

Location: This presentation will be held live at ViaSat in Carlsbad at 2502 Gateway Blvd, Carlsbad 92009 (on the east side of El Camino Real) Bldg 10. For members who don’t find the north county location convenient, it will also be broadcast to Filippi’s Restaurant in Kearny Mesa at 5353 Kearny Villa Rd, San Diego, CA 92123.

Speaker: Dr David Van Voorhees started as a submarine officer, and then developed missiles for about 10 years (systems analysis lead, SM-3 KW Block 0 ALI, systems lead, SM-3 KW Block 1, chief engineer, SM-3 Block 2 US/Japan Cooperative Development). Since 2000, David has been working in cybersecurity (chief engineer, Secure Electronic Messaging Systems, information assurance chief engineer, TSAT SATCOM constellation, technical director, Secure Mobility, and numerous Type 1 and system developments). David is currently securing ViaSat’s emerging global satellite communication system.

Abstract: Over the past few years there has been a growing awareness and then concern about cybersecurity vulnerabilities and attacks. As a result, numerous compliance frameworks have emerged to help companies and government organizations improve their cybersecurity defenses. This talk will provide an overview of some of the most prominent compliance frameworks, including ISO 27001/2, NIST SP 800-53 Rev4 and its CNSS overlays for national security systems, SP 800-171 for US defense contractors, and the NIST cybersecurity framework for critical infrastructure. The strengths and weaknesses of each will be described, and suggestions for integrating them into your system engineering process will be provided. Also, the differences between (a) information assurance and cybersecurity, (b) between security and compliance, will be addressed.

The presentation begins at approximately 6 pm. The first 1/2 hour is for networking. At our Kearny Mesa location, there is an optional buffet dinner beforehand starting at 5:30. Cost is $5 for members, $10 for non-members.
