Abstract:

Aero Ventilator Project:
An effort in response to the DoD “Hack-a-Vent Challenge” by aerospace engineers at SDSU

Amid the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, we, as faculty and students from the Department of Aerospace Engineering at the San Diego State University (SDSU), would like to offer our helping hands. In particular, in March 2020, in response to the call to action from the DoD “DIY Hack-a-Vent Innovation Challenge”, we proposed two scenarios for ventilator designs by following the requirements of the challenge. Though not selected as the Final Five by DoD among the total 172 ventilator design submissions nationwide, we are still working on the two ventilator design prototypes with the support from SDSU based on some philanthropist donations. In this talk, I will review the ventilator design requirement set by the DoD Hack-a-Vent Challenge, the principle and the configurations of our two ventilator designs, the component procurement, the assembly, the testing, the performance parameters, the direction of improvement and the future plans of the two ventilator prototypes.
In addition to the presentation about the ventilator designs, this talk will also present a brief overview of the current research activities being conducted at the Laboratory of Advanced Experimental Fluid Dynamics at SDSU. The unique strength of the lab resides in the novel non-intrusive pressure measurement techniques and their applications in research fields such as turbulence, bio-fluid dynamics, bio acoustics, unsteady aerodynamics, fluid-structure interactions, cavitation, and conventional wind tunnel aerodynamic testing.

Bio: Dr. Xiaofeng Liu, an associate fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), is currently an associate professor at the Department of Aerospace Engineering at San Diego State University. Before joining SDSU, he was first a postdoctoral fellow, and subsequently an assistant research scientist and adjunct principal research engineer at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University. He received his Bachelor and Master degrees in aerodynamics from Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, and a Ph.D. degree in aerospace engineering from University of Notre Dame. Prior to coming to the U.S. for his Ph.D. studies, he was a lecturer at the Department of Engineering Mechanics at Tsinghua University. Before joining the Tsinghua faculty, he was a project manager involved in satellite launch services at the Division of International Cooperation at the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology. Dr. Liu has extensive experience in flow diagnostics including hotwire, seven-hole probe, laser Doppler velocimetry and Particle Image Velocimetry. His research expertise includes high-lift aerodynamics, turbulent shear layer flows, wake flows, vortex dynamics, cavitation, flow-structure interactions, acoustics, supersonic wind tunnel testing, evaporative cooling and heat transfer, image processing, and development of optics-based pressure field measurement techniques. Dr. Liu has been a U.S. citizen since 2010. He has been appointed as an Office of Naval Research Summer Faculty Fellow in 2016, 2018, 2019, and 2020 respectively. He is the recipient of the Best Faculty Award in Aerospace Engineering in 2017 and the Most Influential Faculty Award from SDSU College of Engineering in 2019.
