Dear Members and Friends,

Please join INCOSE San Diego for a virtual half+ day systems engineering tutorial on Data Analytics. This tutorial will be taught by Rick Hefner, PhD, Caltech Center for Technology and Management Education and will include greater depth than regular chapter presentations. Come learn more on data analytics.

Data Analysis refers to inspecting, transforming, and modeling data with the goal of discovering useful information to support decision-making. Data analysis has always played a vital role in helping businesses and systems operate more effectively, and increasingly a key role in design challenges such as autonomy and artificial intelligence.

Please check back for pre-read information before May 22nd! If you have questions about registration or the tutorial, we can be reached at info@sdincose.org. Course slides will be made available several days before the tutorial.

When: Saturday, 22 May 2021, from 9am – 3pm Pacific Time (includes half hour lunch break).
Where: Virtual
Cost: Free for INCOSE members (including CAB members) / $5 for non-INCOSE students / $15 for all other non-INCOSE attendees
Webcast: (20 May 2021 update) Webcast login information in addition to a link to the slides has been emailed to registered attendees. Please contact us at info@sdincose.org if you did not receive them. If you registered after this day/time you will receive the information sometime Friday, or Saturday for last minute registrations. Again please email us at info@sdincose.org if there’s a problem!

Synopsis:

Data analysis refers to inspecting, transforming, and modeling data with the goal of discovering useful information to support decision-making. Data analysis has always played a vital role in helping businesses and systems operate more effectively, and increasingly a key role in design challenges such as autonomy and artificial intelligence.

The tutorial will present a comprehensive overview of data analytics as it applied to current and future system design, development, operations, and maintenance. We will review of the challenges and opportunities for the systems engineering discipline and present an integrated view of systems engineering, systems thinking, and data analytics. Tools and methods for dealing with ill-defined boundaries, requirements, and interfaces will be highlighted. Guest speakers will address how they have used data analytics in their systems. The concepts will be useful for any systems engineer who is looking to implement advanced designs concepts involving big data and the internet of things.

Presenter: Mr. Rick Hefner, PhD, Caltech Center for Technology and Management Education and INCOSE Los Angeles board officer.

Dr. Rick Hefner serves as the Program Director for Caltech’s Center for Technology and Management Education, where he is responsible for professional training programs. He has over 40 years of experience in systems engineering and management and has also worked with companies and government agencies in the aerospace, communications, electronics, and health sciences industries. He is credited with over 100 publications, and is active in several professional societies. Dr. Hefner has his BS and MS in Interdisciplinary Engineering from Purdue and his PhD in Mechanical Engineering from UCLA.

Systems Engineering Professional (SEP) Test Cohort Training

This RSVP page is to register for the joint INCOSE Los Angeles and San Diego chapters’ Systems Engineering Professional (SEP) collaborative organized group study, henceforth known as a Cohort.

This Cohort team will meet virtually every WEDNESDAY, between 12-1:30 PM Pacific Time, for 14 weeks starting May 26, 2021. (Note that there is also a Thursdays Cohort that meets in the evening if this is more convenient for you.) The purpose of the meetings is to prepare to take and pass the INCOSE SEP test, which is required to obtain Associative Systems Engineering Professional (ASEP) or Certified Systems Engineering Professional (CSEP) certification. Note that there will also be an optional extra session on 1 Sept 2021 to practice test questions.

Important Details on the Cohort Sessions:

Meeting Day and Time: Every Wednesday, from 12-1:30 PM Pacific Time
Dates: May 26 – August 25, 2021 (14 meetings). Optional additional meeting for test practice.
Webcast Connection Information: This information will be emailed to registered participants.
Cost: Free.
Cohorts Leaders: This afternoon Cohorts session will be organized/led by Mr. Ted Mulder and Mr. Abbas Rostami.
Contact us: Please reach out to us with any questions at info@sdincose.org and/or info@incose-la.org.

What is SEP Certification? Please see the main INCOSE website’s Certification Program Overview page.

What is Cohorts training? A cohort is a group of committed individuals preparing to take their SEP test to obtain ASEP or CSEP certification. They desire to work together to learn, encourage, and work together to prepare for what is considered a challenging test.
